This diary of 14-year-old Ma Yan, who lived with her family in a drought-stricken corner of rural China, was published in Europe in 2001. It led the creation of an international fund for the education of Ma Yan and other poor children in her village.

Yan Yan - Yan Yan (嚴顏) was a brave and loyal general under Liu Zhang during the Three Kingdoms Period in Chinese history. He was later captured by Zhang Fei after being defeated by him, but refused to submit to Zhang.

Martin Yan - Martin Yan (甄文達 Pinyin: Zhēn Wéndá; later 殷文達 Yīn Wéndá, note that 甄 and 殷 are both Yan in Cantonese) (born 1948) is a Chinese-born American chef and actor who hosts the award-winning national cooking show Yan Can Cook.

Stephen Yan - Stephen Yan (born in Hong Kong, China) was the host of the successful Canadian television cooking show Wok with Yan.
